Preventing Violence

Social Contract

The School District, City Departments, Home and School Associations, business associations and community organizations pledge to work with Youth Safety Coalitions to develop neighborhood strategies to prevent violence in and out of school, with special emphasis on creating Safe Corridors around the schools and throughout the neighborhood.

  • School District Office of Climate and Safety-This Office coordinates all programs related to safety in and around the schools.
  • City Violence Prevention Programs-215-686-8738 Includes Peaceful Posse and Creative Resolution Theatre
  • DHS Community Based Prevention Program-Department of Human Services EPIC Stakeholders Groups building school/partnerships to reduce truancy and violence.
  • Parent Truant Officers-Mayor Street Inducts Parent Truant Offices to Reduce Truancy and Violence.
  • Safe Corridor Program Coordinated by the School District's Office of Climate and Safety and Town Watch, Safe Corridors is a collaboration between the schools, the Philadelphia Police Department, Philadelphia Townwatch and the community. Safe Corridors provide students with safe, volunteer-patrolled routes to and from school
  • Town Watch Groups-Philadelphia Town Watch Organizations and Crime Statistics by Police District. Philadelphia Town Watch is responsible for training people involved in Safe Corridors
  • Mothers in Charge-Led by mothers who themselves have lost children to street violence, Mothers in Charge works with first-time juvenile offenders and at-risk young people to help them reject violence in their lives.
  • Men United for a Better Philadelphia- A Network of African-American men in Philadelphia work to reduce violence in the Black community.
